Solve the problem.

The formula d = rt gives the distance traveled in time t at rate r. If a bicyclist rides for 2.3 hours and travels 41 miles, what was her average speed?

A. 9.43 miles per hour
B. 5.6 miles per hour
C. 17.83 miles per hour
D. 38.7 miles per hour

distance = 41
time = 2.3 hrs

d = rt

41 = 2.3r {substituted into distance formula}
r = 17.83 miles per hour {divided both sides by 2.3}

You just plug in the numbers. d is the distance. r is the rate or speed. t is the time.

the time is 2.3 hours. the distance is 41 miles. the speed is what you are looking for.

d=rt

41 = r × 2.3
The objective is to get r by itself on one side of the equation and to do that you have to get rid of the 2.3 or at least move it to the other side. Because 2.3 is being multiplied you can do the inverse operation and divide by 2.3
Whenever you have an equation you must always perform operations to both sides of the equation!

41 = r × 2.3
Divide by 2.3 to both sides.
41 ÷ 2.3 = r × 2.3 ÷ 2.3
The 2.3 ÷ 2.3 equals one.
41 ÷ 2.3 = r × 1
r multiplied by 1 is r
41 ÷ 2.3 = r
divide. The answer is about 18.
17.83 = r

C

41=2.3t
41/2.3=17.83
t=17.83
C is the answer.
