Lexus IS350 vs BMW 335i?

Trying to decide between Lexus IS350 or BWM 335i…the 2007 models I think…

I had my heart set on the Lexus because I’ve always wanted a Lexus but I’ve looked at some reviews and most of them the 335i beats out the IS350

On paper, both cars are exactly the same. Same size, same features, etc. Put them to the test, and you’ll see the difference.

Now BMW’s model name is 335i, but the engine is actually a 3.0i. It’s engine creates a solid 300HP with an inline six and twinturbo. As for Lexus, it also creates 300HP, but it has a 3.5i V6. To be honest, I found that BMW’s 3.0i engine has a better feeling, even though it’s smaller and isn’t a V-type engine.

On the interior, both provide plenty of room with luxurious design and top material. On the Lexus, you have a touchscreen right under the air vents and buttons on the side for shortcuts. BMW, has a screen on top of the air vents and uses the iDrive knob to control stuff. Since this is a 2007 model, BMW still uses the old iDrive interface, and let me tell you from experience, it sucks! Sure it may have good resolution, but you have to go through screen from screen to get to where you want. On the Lexus you just hit a button on the screen and there you are! Big advantage on the Lexus.

On both cars, you have auxiliary standard, but to get an actual USB iPod adapter, you have to look for a higher trim level. Both offer bluetooth, navigation etc. but it’s not standard, so as I said before, you have to look for a higher trim level. On both you get a 6 CD changer, but on the BMW you get Harmon Kardon Logic 7 with 13 speakers, but on Lexus you get Mark Levingston with 14 speakers. You honestly can’t tell the difference.

Also, since you live in North/Midwest section, you need AWD. BMW 335xi is really great in snow. It offers better wheels and ABS, but to get the Lexus IS AWD, you have to get a smaller, less powerful engine.

BMW offers a better AWD, engine, and all together is a lot more sportier than the Lexus. But if your all into these toys and gadgets on a car, Lexus’s media interfaces kicks iDrive’s butt big time! I’de pick BMW over Lexus any day, but for you, that’s your choice.

Car mags will always choose a BMW over Lexus as well as almost any other luxury automaker. Car mags focus more on the raw performance of the vehicle rather than normal attributes that day to day drivers really need in a car. So if you spend a lot of time driving on racetracks get the 335i. It drives better than the Lexus if your going to push your car to the limit on a daily basis. If your like the rest of us you will appreciate how much more refined, comfortable, and luxurious the Lexus is especially on congested city streets and freeways.

I was going to get a 335i until:

Unless you’re on the track a lot with deep pockets, go with a Lexus for a balanced everyday driving experience. The IS 350 is a 5 second car for short sprints and very comfortable doing it. It’s also very reliable. I was also shocked that my IS350 had a $3.00 higher 6 month premium over my same year Toyota Camry Hybrid with State Farm 🙂

The 335i will give you a far less isolated driving experience. You will grow to love the 335i. The IS is a nice car but it was debuted by Lexus to try and clone the 3 series, similar to how there LS clones the mercedes s class. However, in this case, the 335i still comes out better. Also, if you need AWD, you can get a 335xi but you would have to move down and get an IS250 awd. Both will offer you great comfort and both offer great amenities. The difference is if you would like to enjoy the driving experience aka 335i or feel isolated aka IS350.

The 335xi will be better in snow, and like I said, you would have to get a less powerful IS to get AWD. My friend has a 2006 IS 350 which is absolutely the worst thing to have in the snow.

Sounds like you want toys and style over driving performance. In that case, the Lexus is the better choice.

The BMW is much better drivers car, but that’s only noticeable when you drive it fairly hard. I’ve driven both on the track and the BMW kills the Lexus. But for cruising around, listening to the stereo and connecting your fancy electronic devices, the Lexus is a great choice.

For either car, invest in a good set of snow tires for winter driving. That combined with traction control, ABS and all the other stuff will keep you on the road.
