Jesse Owens (track)
Jackie Joyner-Kersee (track)
How about the best athlete being the one who excelled at the most sports? Jim Thorpe immediately comes to mind. He may have
been the best football player of his time. He also was an Olympic champion in the decathlon which requires a number of individual skills. And he also played major league baseball for several years. He was not a great baseball player, but he did
hit 320 one year.
As for the best female athlete I’d have to say Catriona LeMay Done – a multi Olympic speed skating champion. Unbelieveable.
Earl “The Goat” Manigault “Maniigault was particularly famous for his leaping abilities on the basketball court, including his signature move – the double dunk. He would dunk the ball and catch it with the other hand while still in the air and dunk it again. He was said to be able to touch the top of the backboard to retrieve quarters and dollar bills” “Earl played with some of the best players of his day, such as Earl Monroe, Connie Hawkins and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who went as far as calling Earl the greatest player he had ever seen. When Kareem finished his career with the Los Angeles Lakers and had his number retired at the Los Angeles Forum, he was asked who was the greatest player he had played with or against. After a long silence, Kareem answered ‘It would have to be Earl “The Goat” Manigault,’ much to the amazement of many.” Unfortunately, because of heroin addiction, he never made it though college and ended up in prison. If you get a chance, check out: “Rebound: The Legend of Earl ‘The Goat’ Manigault”. It’s a good movie, but incredibly sad.
The man is Jim Thorpe and the woman is Mildred ‘Babe’ Zaharias, there are other athlete that were great but to me these are the best. If you break it down into sports then you have people who excel in their sport but only did little or poor in other sports.
Babe Ruth the legend!
Even though I’m a Met fan and Babe Ruth use to play on the Yankees he’s good. And also Hank Aaron because of his HR hitting.
Babe Zaharis, Golf
Jim Thorpe, Olympics, Decathalon
Jesse Owens – Male
I think it either is – or soon will be – Tiger Woods. He dominates his game like no other athlete ever did.
Woman: I’m not sure.
Marius Pudianowski, 4 time World’s strongest man champion.
