I’ve started to look into him more once he put Beckham in his place (even though I will always be a huge Beckham fan) and his amazing off-field persona as one of the most humble athletes in the world today.
With that being said, can he be added to the list along with Messi, Kaka, Ronaldo, etc.?
You really want to know?
Fine I’ll list them since I watch soccer. I’ve listed top 50 but really he’s around top 250. EVEN RIGHT NOW, what if he played for countries like Brazil, Spain or even Germany… He’ll never start for them and come off the bench if he’s lucky. Put guys that never start in those teams to USA national team and they can perform when they are needed. To be even top 100, you MUST play for quality clubs or have extraordinary career at a middle-tier clubs at a top League. To be a proven player you have to just do more than World Cup. Yes, World Cup is the biggest stage but he doesn’t play in European League. I have no doubt he will do well in middle-card teams in top league(Everton). But the question is, can he start regularly and play in consistent quality matches in top clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, etc. He even failed to be atleast a benchwarmer in Bayern Munich when the team wasn’t good that time.
This is the top 10 leagues in the world:
1 Premier League(ENG)
2 Primera División(SPA)
3 Serie A(ITA)
4 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A(BRA)
6 Torneo Clausura(ARG)
7 Ligue 1(FRA)
8 Liga Sagres (POR)
9 Primera División Clausura(MEX)
10 Premier Liga(RUS)
MLS is merely top 20 league in the world where he’s the best player. Don’t be fooled only by his performance in the World Cup and MLS. He also played in Everton THIS YEAR and he’s been decent.
This is the top 50 players(Donovan not included):
1 Lionel Messi
2 Cristiano Ronaldo
4 Didier Drogba
5 Gonzalo Higuan
6 Iker Casillas
7 Arjen Robben
8 Franck Ribery

All the thumbs down I get are from idiots who don’t watch enough soccer. Get educated. Watch some European League games…
You’re surprised someone said 100??? Man, honestly, it’s surely not, NEVER, 100. Donovan is the best player in the USA. Let’s look at mexico for example, you have Giovani dos Santos + Marquez + Vela + Guille Franco, already lots of better players. So even in North America he’d be like, top five. Now imagine including South America, Africa and Europe. I’ll give you 99 players better than Donovan, because it’s so easy: Messi, C. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Aguero, Higuain, Drogba, Eto’o, L+ucio, Luís Fabiano, Júlio César, Buffon, Evra, Henry, Benzema, Ribery, Robben, Sneijder, Cannavaro, Villa, Fernando Torres, Juan Mata, Nani, Quaresma, Falcao, Bruno Alves, Pepe, Iniesta, Xavi, Yaya Touré, Kolo Touré, Maicon, Daniel Alves…. I mean come on, Donovan is more like #600… Those players were just really TOP players from the top of my head.
PS – This is a RIGHT NOW list. There are lots of top, much bigger clubs than Everton, each with about 25 players. How many would you think are better than Donovan, to be there?
So the simple answer is no, not even top 100. I’m not an American hater, it’s just there are really lots of much better, awesome, players, you just don’t know because you don’t watch football regularly, specially European football where the best players play.
Anyway, I really liked your team against Slovenia and the way they play, I hope they go far. Altidore is a good striker.
Can you really give me your paycheck if I really say 99? I accept paypal.
Well I think you are getting slighty carried away with yourselves because he scored a late winner and then made a heartfelt speech. Donovan is a slighty above average player when on loan in the English Premier League. He has put some good performances in but he is hardly amongst the greats yet.
But Football will do that to you – it’s hard not to get swept away with yourself when the game is so tense (especially at this level). It’s good that you are enjoying the sport – and opinion is subjective and you are entitled to yours.
I actually think he may be in the top 50 or so ( a BIG compliment). He has some good qualities to his game but sometimes his decision making is wrong.
The suggestion that he can be put in the top 5 of the best players is outrageous!
The best players in the world have to perform consistently at the highest level for years before they earn that recognition.
What has Landon Donovan achieved in his career so far? Donovan put in some good performances at middle ranking Everton last season but the only way to judge him against the best players is for him to play regularly in the EPL or other top European league.
I would rank Landon Donovan in the top 50 players in the world right now and that is generous.
As far as his persona is concerned I think he comes accross as a gushing diva in interviews. When asked how he feels after a game he talks about his divorce and heartache. He seems a bit effete and pretensious to me.
England 4 USA 0
no not at all!!! he has a looooooooooooooooooong way to go. Messi, Kaka, Ronaldo didnt join the list under one night. he’s still a beginner and has a lot more to learn. true that he’s a key player in USA team but u cant compare him to world class players like messi or kaka. but now that he’s being recognized, this can be his first step to join but trust me, it’ll take a while.
He’s one of the greatest USA players of all time but in with Messi, Kaka and Ronaldo?
There are better players who never even qualified for the World Cup. Not taking anything away from Donovan but he himself would know that.
Donovan is 28. When Beckham was that age, he had just finished playing with Manchested United, and had moved on to play with Real Madrid. Massive teams.
Donovan has done well with USA, but he is no where a “great”, not yet at least.
A top 5 player in the world? No.
A top five player in N. America? Definitely.
I think he is one of the 10 best players in the world, but not an all-time world great
